This week Qantas trial virtual reality headsets for passengers flying first class, the growth in mobile apps is fuelling Chinese ecommerce and Swiss watch exports rose to a record high in 2014 yet demand in key markets dropped.

1. Swiss Watchmakers Clock Record Exports in 2014

‘Swiss watch exports swelled to a record high in 2014, customs data showed Tuesday, but the data doesn’t augur well for the future as they slowed in December, in particular in the key Chinese market.’

2. Chinese consumers buy more luxuries overseas

‘Luxury brands had a tough time in China last year, with domestic consumers more willing to go overseas for bargains. According to the 2014 China Luxury Report, which was released on Saturday by the Shanghai-based research center Fortune Character Institute, 117 million Chinese tourists visited abroad last year, a 20 percent year-on-year increase.’

3. Qantas virtual-reality flights take off

‘In an aviation first, Qantas is to equip passengers with virtual-reality headsets so they can explore destinations on the ground while in the air. Travel experts predict that we’ll be able to ‘visit’ precise replicas of the world’s most famous sites using virtual reality headsets within a decade.’

4. Luxury consumers to spend over a trillion by 2021

Together with Boston Consulting Group and EXANE BNP Paribas, Italy’s Altagamma Foundation presented the True Luxury Global Consumer Insight 2015, a survey that describes the present situation of the luxury market consumer and retail. The consumption of personal luxury products will increase by a compound annual growth rate of 4.7%, spearheaded by jewellery,watches and leather goods.

5. E-Commerce Sales in China Will Reach $1 Trillion By 2019 Thanks To Mobile, Says Forrester

‘A new report by Forrester finds that online spending in China will reach one trillion dollars by 2019. The growth will be fueled by mobile apps and improving logistics networks, which have helped e-commerce companies reach new customers in smaller cities.’
